Welgevonden - 1 of 100

As a wildfire spread through the South African reserve, several men worked the fire line by hand, cutting away dry bushes with machetes to slow its advance. Framed by smoke and an amber sky, the silhouettes show the men working.

The photograph was taken by Nils, a photographer based in Amsterdam but travelling worldwide to capture nature. This is his first available artwork on Isola Aperta.

The photograph was taken on August 2023 in the Welgevonden Game Reserve. It is located in the Waterberg District of the Limpopo province, South Africa. This region is known for its mountain landscapes and bushveld scenery, as well as the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve.

/ about Nils

Nils is a Dutch photographer based in Amsterdam. His photographs are cinematic and slow. It shows a form of nature that is shaped by light. His goal is to make pictures that give the feeling that you step into rather than look at.

He has worked with cameras since twelve, professionally since sixteen, beginning in film, which still shapes his composition. His practice runs on patience and precision.
